RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019,
The Perennial Lifeline Garden
Awarded RHS Silver-Gilt Medal
Using the principles and materials of classical design, this garden looks to the future with a modern reimagining of Sir Roy Strong’s The Laskett’s colonnade and rose garden. It is a celebration of Perennial charity’s 180th anniversary and Sir Roy’s bequeathment of The Laskett to them.
Clipped hedging, sculptural trees, steel panels, a contemporary rill, elegant fountains and a rose meadow combine in a strikingly modern design, strongly rooted in history. Conceived to be viewed from all four sides with composed vistas drawing people in, the water feature traverses the colonnade and is constructed to allow visitors to walk underneath the cascading water, which flows into a rill circulating the garden. Cantilevered stone seats provide quiet spots for visitors to perch and contemplate. In between this formal structure of steel panels, stone and formal clipped topiary, roses intermingle with ornamental grasses, perennials and bulbs to create a soft and romantic atmosphere.
